Stitch this delicate topiary tree while learning the basics of silk ribbon embroidery on 18-count canvas! The tree is surrounded by a series of five canvaswork borders primarily using silk threads. The student will learn to create dimension and texture, especially in the tree and basket, by using ribbon embroidery techniques. The tree background pattern and surrounding borders also add dimension by using a variety of silk threads in varying weights and thicknesses. Embellishment with seed beads, holographic sequins and crystals enhance and add texture to the design. During class I will share the history of silk ribbon embroidery and my passion for this dimensional form of needlework.

The background fabric is 18-count Victorian Red canvas, hand painted with gold metallic paint. The topiary is created with River Silks overdyed 4mm silk ribbon, while the basket uses Alchemy Yarns overdyed Silken Straw. The diamond pattern behind the topiary is Petite Silk Lame Braid. Silk & Ivory Stardust, Painter’s Threads Shimmer Ribbon Floss, Caron Wildflowers, Pepper Pot Silk, Vineyard Silks, and Needlepoint Silk are also used in the five border patterns.

The ribbon stitch is used for the tree, a charted backstitch pattern for the basket, and a diamond trellis pattern for the background center area. The five border patterns are created using the knitting stitch, Pekinese stitch, slanted Gobelin, trellis cross with beads, and the upright cross stitch. All stitches and techniques will be demonstrated during class.
